The ProjectMessage from the Development TeamOne morning during the summer of 1968, I ended up at Riveredge Marina with my Dad, not knowing why, but happy to be there. As I soon learned, my Dad and the marina owner, Mr. Miner, had made a deal. On that day, I became captain of my own ship, a twelve foot Starcraft with a black 4 horse Merc. The I left the gas dock and headed northeast, braving the current of the Squam River and the narrowness of the bridge, as Little Squam opened up. My journey was clear, cross Little Squam, navigate the channel, and land back at our camp in what was once called Glen Cove. Neither Magellan nor Columbus had anything on me that day. On the way back to Glen Cove, I cruised past a few other Captain’s camps, one which had a 5½ horse Johnson on a nameless, shiny boat with a greasy bottom, another with a 7.5 horse Merc on a fast, MFG fiberglass boat. In the summer days to come, we would dive the reefs, explore unchartered islands, race with cinder blocks secured in our bows, deliver newspapers and just about everything else a nine year old Captain of their own ship can do. In the winter of 2004, I found myself back at Riveredge Marina, not quite knowing why, but happy to be there. The aspirations of a Developer aligned with happy memories of the kid in the boat. I felt an opportunity had come. As you learn more about our vision for the re-development of Riveredge Marina and surrounding land, I hope our plans for Squam River Landing will meet with your approval. Our development team is composed of talented people who understand and value the timeless and special world of Squam. I look forward to meeting you and waving as we pass in channel, headed on to another adventure on the open water. Best regards, Barry |
